Chapter 3: Goodbye
A shuffle. A movement. A dripping sound. A loud beep. A shout.
“She’s woken up!”
“Huh……” I murmured as I opened my eyes to the bright white light.
Memories of what must have been yesterday came rushing back into my mind.
I struggled to sit up, to see where I was, to see where Kurt was.
A stabbing pain ran down my side I screamed and collapsed back onto the pillow.
A figure in white came rushing towards me and worriedly asked me,
“Are you all right Amina?”
I cringed at the sound of my full name, it had been so long any one had called me that cursed name Amina.
I replied to her through gritted teeth,
“I don’t know…. I’m in pain if that’s what you mean. But what happened?”
She stared down at me with a sad gaze,
“Kurtis told us everything.”
I stared at her in shock. How could K have told her we were practically fairies?
She seemed to have taken my look as misunderstanding or the after affect of bumping my head, as she rushed on hurriedly,
“How you chased that thief into the woods after he stole the flag, how you were bit by a spider? You don’t remember? Hmmm. Well he couldn’t lift you for your own health, he knew that, so he tried to cut of the circulation so the poison wouldn’t reach the rest of your blood, he must have been concentrating quite hard because then….. then…..”
I stared up at the nurse who was identified as Lillianne and I tried hard to look as if I was trying to remember then ushered her on,
“Then?”
She stared at me in great sorrow then started slowly,
“Well, then the storm came, and with it…. lightning. Your friend didn’t realise until it was to late the tree was on fire, the lightning had hit it. It was falling on you, he tried to push you out of the way. He was so brave, but it swayed at the last minute it fell on you.”
I suddenly remembered, I shot up much to the disagreement of my side and back,
“Where’s Kurt!? What happened to him?!”
Lillianne pointed to a chair in the corner where Kurt was sound asleep.
“He dislocated almost all the joints in his arms and fingers. They were fixed easily, but the poor tike was in so much pain. He’ll be fine though.”
Relief washed through me to hear he was okay.
“But why is he here?”
I enquired, wondering why he wasn’t in a bed of his own.
“Well, he refused to leave your side. See, he woke up when we tried to lift him. He refused to let us carry him, so he walked to the ambulance and told us to fix him there and then! He said something about all this being his fault, I didn’t understand that. So do you know what he might have meant?”
I shook my head and murmured,
“No.” I tried to bring back the fall to the front of my mind.
“Oh-No” I didn’t realise I had spoken until the nurse stared down at me and asked curiously,
“Is something wrong, darl?’”
Of course some thing’s wrong! My best friend is blaming himself for what must have been an accident!
“No, nothing.”
I replied nearly subconsciously as I thought of a way to prove to him it wasn’t his fault…….
“Huh…..”
There was a murmer from the corner.
Kurt muttered with his eyes still closed,
“Nurse, is she awake yet?”
I automatically shot up and ran over to him to nearly knock him of his chair as I hugged him.
Shocked, he opened his eyes, which lit up with joy.
“I am so sorry.”
He muttered in to my ear.
I muttered back,
“What the hell for?!”
“Wait a minute Missy! You should be in bed, resting! I got your rib broken, so I’ve got the responsibility to heal it!”
The nurse seemed to have come over to us because she objected,
“Not quite hon, that’s my responsibility. But you’re right, no matter how minor a break it was you should be resting!”
I felt happy right here – albeit in a blue night dress and bandages covering half my body – I was happy. So I objected,
“I feel fine! And he should be resting to!” rising to my feet.
“If you feel fine, please walk around the room.”
I did as she asked with only a slight twinge running through my side. I stared defiantly at her. She sighed and said,
“Okay, I think that what we’ll do is we can take you home tonight, BUT you’ll be confined to bed for eight weeks, just to be safe.”
She continued,
“Now your friend Amy says that you have been staying at her house on account of the fact that your mother is on a buisness trip, is this correct?”
I nodded.
“Well your friend also predicted you’d want to get home as soon as possible, so she brought you all your favourite clothes and your “Leave me alone, I’ve got a broken bone, !” badge.” with a hiss of dissaproval in her voice, she opened her mouth to continue but was interrupted by Kurt’s snort of laughter at the mention of the badge I had made in 4th grade when I broke my arm.
“As I was saying, it looks like she was right, so the bathrooms are on the door to the left, and your clothes are in the suitcase under the bed.”
“Now Mr Grey-stone it’s probably best if you go back home soon as well.”
Kurt nodded vigorously and said,
“My parents are on notice so they’ll be here in five minutes!”
I knew his enthusiasm was only for the fact that as soon as we were both home we would be able to discuss what had happened yesterday – that was the advantage of staying at Amy’s house was K was her next door neighbour.
“I’ll call your parents and tell them to keep you calm, and close to home for three weeks or so and to make sure you don’t agrivate the dislocation.”
“ Now, Miss here are your clothes, and I’ll call your friend to get her parents to pick you up.”
She stated as she opened my suitcase on the bed,
“I’d suggest you hurry it’s nearly six…. PM.”
I gasped at how long I’d been out for and hurried over to grab my favourite clothes – grey cargoes and a violet long sleeved shirt with silver sequins.
I gave Kurt one last hug and turned to the bathroom but the nurse grabbed me and said,
“You’ll have to shower with the bandages on I’m afraid.”
I nodded hurriedly and rushed into the bathroom where I stripped in world record time and hopped into the large shower as the water ran down my scarred body.
