Christobel Mattingley has published 46 books. Some have won awards, been shortlisted, translated or made into films by the ABC. Mattingley writes for all ages, from picture books to biography and history. No Gun for Asmir (1993), the first in her trilogy about a Bosnian refugee family, has been reprinted 20 times. Her groundbreaking South Australian Aboriginal history, Survival in Our Own Land (1988), now in its 4th edition, has become the standard reference. She is working again with Aboriginal people to help them tell the Maralinga story. her forthcoming children's book, Chelonia Green, deals with the effects of marine pollution on turtles.

Battle Order 204, already in its 4th printing in four months and to be released in Britain and USA in September, is the story of Mattingley's husband David's years as an RAAF pilot serving in RAF Bomber Command. David's passion for planes culminated in flying the mighty Lancaster on 23 missions over occupied Europe in 1944. On fateful Battle Order 204 his plane was shot up three times over Germany. But despite a fractured skull, severed tendons and artery in his right hand, and injured shoulder and leg, he brought his plane and precious crew back to their home base.
