The Wildlife Smugglers
BBC World Service, London, 2009

Worldwide, the illegal trade in wildlife is worth up to $25bn a year. With lower fines and shorter prison terms, compared to drugs or weapons smuggling, it is attracting organised criminals, looking for big money and low risk. Some estimates put the trade second to drug smuggling, with endangered animals becoming the new blood diamonds, funding war and terror. Despite its tough smuggling laws, Australia is counting the cost as its rare birds and reptiles are targeted. Sharon Mascall spent four months tracking the trade, speaking to investigators, customs officers and dealers, attracting the attention of smugglers along the way.
