We hold monthly meetings where we discuss everything from works in progress, comparison and analysis of various authors' techniques and styles, research tips and occasional guest speakers on topics like forensics and police procedures. Our goal is to become the public face of crime writing in SA and, as the group evolves, we hope it will become a place where people who enjoy the genre and understand how it works will be able to inspire and support each other through the entire writing process.

Friendly Street is Australia’s longest running community open-poetry reading venue. Started in 1975 by Andrew Taylor, Richard Tipping and Ian Reid. Friendly Street was Adelaide’s first regular, open-to-all poetry reading. It has since achieved local and national recognition for its dedication to the nurturing, support and promotion of poetry. It has achieved this through the regular monthly readings and, importantly, through its initially self-funded, then State assisted, publications. The earliest and most important of these was the Friendly Street Reader, incorporating the best of the previous years readings. Other publications include the New Poets series and over 25 collections of individual poets. Over the years, Friendly Street has provided a platform for new and emerging poets and a venue for more established writers to nurture their artistic growth. It secures prize money for two statewide annual poetry competitions. Some of the established poets who have strutted their stuff at Friendly Street include John Bray, Jenny Boult, Louise Crisp, Steve Evans, Peter Goldsworthy, Jeff Guess, Rory Harris, Jeri Kroll, Mike Ladd, Kate Llewellyn, Jan Owen, Neil Paech, Graham Rowlands and Richard Tipping. The secret of Friendly Street’s longevity and success? Perhaps it is that Friendly Street remains true to its original vision. And above all, it remains a place where poets of all kinds can come together, and where poetry lives and breathes in its oldest form - the spoken word.

Their work is produced in a variety of forms including book and journal publications, films and documentaries, script writing and journalism. As an association ISAA has no political affiliations but seeks to encourage all who, independently of institutions, offer well-founded studies of society, in the humanities and the sciences, or ideas of cultural significance. Scholarship and enthusiasm need to be supported, particularly at a time when governments, and therefore government-funded institutions, tend to regard scholarship as an economic commodity rather than the fabric of civilisation. Our requirement for membership is you write speculative fiction – which includes science fiction, and fantasy, and other manifestations of fantastic literature. If you write about ancient super-science, realities that dissolve and reform like mist, intelligent alien creatures from other galaxies, futures where machines have replaced humans, journeys to the furthest points of the universe, human beings with the power of the gods endowed by science and technology, magic realms where wizards and witches battle for the souls of mere mortals, monsters with human hearts, about heroes and heroines struggling against the forces of darkness, shapeshifters who catch the bus home on King William Street, and if you want to dream on the written page about worlds different from the common day reality, then you are invited to join the Mutant Stepchildren. Our group provides feedback and assessment on the writing of its members, discusses technical problems and other aspects of writing and publishing speculative fiction.
