1993 saw the inception of the Barbara Hanrahan Fellowship, announced by SA's Minister for the Arts, The Honorable Anne Levy, pictured above. It also heralded the 'Bringing the Water' anthology: follow the publications link above for details. The SA Writers' Centre continued to host an array of events and seminars, all cunningly designed to inspire literary genius.

New Writing Performed

April heralded a new season of New Writing Performed. The event was held at Cafe Tapas, 242 Rundle Street.

Featured were special guests Judith Rodriguez, Tom Shapcott, Noel Purdon, Sergio Ubaldi, Geraldine Halls (alias Charlotte Jay), Jason Sweeney, Ben Winch, Shirley Despoja, Rory Harris, Linda Marie Walker, Douglas McKay, David Lewis, Peter McFarlane, Sheela Langeberg, Steve Brock, Rebecca Collins and Eric Willmot.

Views on Reviews

The Views on Reviews Conference was organised under the umbrella of the SA Writers' Centre in conjunction with the British Council, the Education Department of SA, Radio 5UV, and the University of South Australia. It was a two day event held at the Orphanage Teachers' Centre, which discussed the role of the reviewer in children's literature.

Presenters included Nancy Chambers, Gary Crew, Jenny Pausacker, Gillian Rubinstein, Katharine England, Agnes Nieuwenhuizen, Erica Irving and Walter McVitty.

Images on Broken Glass: a Multicultural Conference

On the weekend of September 18 and 19, 1993, the SA Writers Centre, the Multicultural Writers' Association of SA, the Multicultural Arts Trust of SA and the State Library of SA hosted a Multicultural Conference, Images on Broken Glass.

Local, interstate and overseas speakers, including Mudrooroo Nyoongah (pictured), Chandani Lokuge and David Adams Richards adressed questions confronting multicultural writers and writing.

New Writing Performed

An exciting new season of New Writing Performed began on Tuesday October 19 at 8pm. Sponsored by Foundation SA, the season of four weeks delivered an entertaining mix of work from prose writers, poets, playwrights, comic writers and storytellers.

The event was held again at Cafe Tapas in Rundle Street, and attendees enjoyed a banquet dinner of Spanish cuisine.

Bringing the Water

December 1993, Bringing the Water was born! From reams of writing received, Barry Westburg and Moya Costello selected and sandwiched together 33 stories.

The anthology was launched - just in time for Christmas stockings - at the 1993 St Lucy's Party.

Short Story Seminar

The SA Writers' Centre hosted a short story writing seminar from 10-4pm on 27 February 1993.

Our special guest was Philip Neilson, short story writer, editor of Queensland's Imago magazine, and member of the Literature Board of the Australia Council.

Gary Crew Master Class

Award winning children's writer Gary Crew lead a Master Class, beginning Friday evening 30 April, and ending 5 May. The seminar was conducted via 'individual consultations', to suit writers who had other commitments during office hours.

Garry Disher and the Business of Writing Seminar

Garry Disher and Caroline Macdonald (pictured left) were the SA Writers' Centre's special guests on Saturday August 14 at a seminar dealing with the 'business of writing'.

Topics covered included marketing yourself, keeping records, the rights and wrongs of approaching publishers and funding bodies, the use of agents, which organisations should be joined, and ...what about the 'm' word?

Publishing Seminar

Bruce Pascoe and Lyn Harwood, the team who publish Australian Short Stories, ran this all day seminar on writing and publishing. It was held at the Writers' Centre on 12 December.

The SA Writers Centre continued its sponsorship of this youth initiative, which appeared monthly in dB Magazine.
