2001—another great year for the SA Writers' Centre. We held our first SAWC Seaview Press competition and Take a South Australian Writer to Bed promotion. We launched our Handbook for SA Writers, and welcomed top Slovenian writers to the SAWC. Writers' Caf 2001

The success of this event resulted in its moving out of the umbrella of the Fringe years and into being an event of its own right. 2001 saw the Writers' Caf becoming a monthly event, with lovers of good food, fine wine and pleasant conversation treated to a Caf on the first Monday of each month, at Koko's Cafe.

Poets 'n' Platters: Langmeil Winery

The SA Writers' Centre and Langmeil Winery joined forces to present this popular event, which took place during the Barossa Vintage Festival.

Six top SA poets, Peter Goldsworthy, Lee Cataldi, Jeff Guess, Louise Nicholas, Bob Magor and Gaynor Bowden, entertained and entranced audiences over two special nights at Langmeil Winery, Tanunda.

Anne-Marie Mykyta Memorial Lecture

This annual event featured guest speaker Tim Heald, whose topic was 'have pen, will travel'. With more than thirty very different works of fact and fiction to his name, Heald continues to refuse to be pigeon-holed and believes passionately that a writer is a writer is a writer.

Slovenian Writers at the SAWC

The SA Writers' Centre was proud to host a very special evening of readings by internationally renowned Slovenian poets and writers Tomaz S~alamun, Evald Flisar, Andrej Blatnik, Maja Vidmar and Lela B Njatin, who were touring Australia, and appearing at the 2001 Melbourne Writers' Festival.

SA Writers' Festival

Writing, songwriting and cartooning workshops were run on 9 and 10 November throughout Onkaparinga libraries. The Writers' Centre offered help with festival attendees searching for accommodation, and encouraged bookshops and libraries to display books by SA Writers. In order to assist them, the SAWC compiled a list of authors, their books, publishers, dates of publications and ISBNs.

Inaugural Poetry Prize

The SA Writers' Centre and Seaview Press combined in 2001 to offer an exciting new opportunity for poets. First prize was the publication of a single volume of poetry.

The 2001 prize was taken out by Geoff Kemp. Seaview Press published a single volume of Geoff's poetry, titled Alfa at Midnight. Congratulations Geoff!

Take a South Australian Writer to Bed…

This fantastic promotion advertised the latest releases for 2000 - 2001 from some of South Australia's Award winning writers. Writing genres included non-fiction, general fiction, science fiction, history, biography, romance, children's publications and poetry. SAWC members were offered a 10% discount at selected bookstores as part of the promotion.

The Agent, Publisher and Writers

At this seminar, industry professionals provided advice for new and established writers about publishing in Australia.

Linda Funnel, Fiction Publisher for HarperCollins spoke about the publishing process and where the writer stands.

Lyn Tranter, Australian Literary Management, defined what a literary agent is, and why one might be needed.

Helen McKerral, writer, discussed the advantages of freelance journalism, and balancing writing for the soul with writing for the wallet.

Rory Barnses, writer, spoke about the unpredictability of the selection process, and the need to keep trying.

Seminar: Writing as a Business

At this seminar, some of our top writers compared notes with a South Australian publisher on the state of publishing today. Topics covered included: finding work opportunities; negotiating payments; the low-down on literary agents; how to sell yourself and your work; handling media interviews and - staying sane!

The seminar featured writers Kirsty Brooks, Phil Cummings, David Harris and Cath Kenneally. Stephanie Johnston from Wakefield Press represented the Publishers' perspective.

Seminar: Real Stories

Are you eccentric, inspired or a survivalist? Is it really easier to have non-fiction published than fiction? These question and more were addressed at this seminar. Established writers and top publishers shared their experiences in the field of non-fiction: research, interviews, topics, markets, payment and all the buzz that goes with writing about life.

The seminar featured Anthony ('Tony') Brown, Kerry Kenihan, Jonathon Stone, Pamela Rajkowski and Rebecca Kaiser.

Young Authors' Night

Young Author's night 2001 featured Ruth Starke giving the keynote address.

This event continued successfully, with presenters Ruth Starke and Peter McFarlane.

dB Young Writers' End of Year Party

Young writers were invited to a Poetry Slam, joining in the competitive art of performance poetry, at a free evening held at the SA Writers' Centre. All participating poets came to the Slam equipped with two poems to read, with the purpose of the evening being to have fun while expressing yourself.

Congratulations to Mem Fox, notable childrens' writer and winner of the SA Great Award 2001 for Literature, awarded during SA Day celebrations on Friday 28 December 2001.

2001 was the year of a sad farewell to the SA Writers' Centre's favorite restaurateur, Ron White, owner of Kokos, venue for Writers' Caf.

Our Annual General Meeting was held in May 2001, and featured guest speaker Peter Sellars, one of the leading theatre, opera and television directors in the world.
