2003: another great SA Writers' Centre year. We enjoyed the second SA Writers Festival, and revised our Handbook for SA Writers, much to the delight of our eager writing public. Our usual bevy of seminars, events and youth occasions continued: follow the links to find out more. And congratulations to DBC Pierre for your Booker Prize, and JM Coetzee, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003.

Poetry Unplugged 2003:
a Southern Celebration of Poetry

The official opening for this City of Onkaparinga festival was 9 Feb, at the Waverly Homestead, Willunga. The Festival ran from 23 - 30 March with a feast of relaxed, informal and thoroughly enjoyable poetry.


April 2003
Poets and Platters at Barossa's Vintage Festival

This event was hosted by Langmeil Winery, with the support of the SA Writers' Centre.

South Australian poets, Geoff Goodfellow, Elizabeth Mansutti, Rory Harris and Nan Witcombe joined interstate bush poet Jim Brown for two evenings of absorbing and humorous entertainment.

SA Writers' Festival Launch & Mass Gathering of SA Writers

June 2003

All SA writers were invited to the launch of the SA Writers' Festival in the Atrium of the SA Writers' Centre. The event's aim was to have the largest gathering of SA Writers ever held in the State. In conjuction with the Festival, Wirra Wirra Vineyards donated a trophy and $1000 cash prize for a Youth and Open Short Story Competition.

Terry Dowling paid tribute to Peter and Mariann McNamara at the launch of 'Forever Shores' (Wakefield Press, launched by Greg Mackie). He spoke of their role in establishing and encouraging some of the best Science Fiction writers in Australia.

Writers' Caf at Worldsend

2003's Writers Caf made the move to the West End, featuring four of SA's talented, funny and provoking writers and musicians.

Anne-Marie Mykyta Lecture, featuring Guest Speaker Garth Nix

Garth Nix was the 2003 guest speaker of this ongoing series of lectures. Garth is a full time writer, whose books are published around the world and are widely translated. These books include the award-winning fantasy novels Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen; a fantasiy series for children called The Seventh Tower, and many other books.

South Australian Writers' Festival

The second SA Writers' Festival was held over a long weekend of September 18-21, and was packed with exciting opportunities. There were a host of activities within the city to choose from, such as unusual and informative library workshops and panels, and provocative discussions and debates.

A short story competition was held over two categories, and was valued at over $3000 in prizes.

A literary dinner, Fox in Stocks, and awards presentation lunch at Wirra Wirra Vineyards encompassed the magnificent McLaren Vale Wine district.

Party Walls

These stories were selected from the outstanding short story entries in the 2003 Wirra Wirra Vineyard Short Story Awards, in both Youth and Open sections.

These new stories will take you to exotic and familiar places. They are told with lively attention to detail and a real feel for the sense of contemporary Australian language. Sometimes the exotic is within. Sometimes the familiar suprises us. Be prepared for an enjoyable journey.

Maximizing Opportunities

This course was held from 22 to 25 July, with a purpose of train emerging professional writers. It was aimed at writers at the beginning of their careers, with some publishing success, to help these burgeoning writers polish their professional skills.

Out of the Pod

Thanks to funding from the SA Youth Arts Board, the SAWC held writing workshops for people aged between 18 and 26, urging them to 'come out of your pod' and discover writing culture in South Australia. Workshop leaders included Sean Williams, Kirsty Brooks, Kim Mann and Tim Sinclair.
