Who can join?
The SA Writers Centre caters for all types of writers – from poets to novelists, from genre writers to playwrights. We also have the following categories that help our members to identify which of our services dovetail most usefully with their current writing practice. Like all classifications there is a good deal of overlap and, while various funding bodies and industry organizations employ the categories emerging, developing and established, our categories are more a guide for members when they are seeking advice on professional development.
As a service organization for writers, we've identified three relatively loose categories among our membership.
Some members in the New or Developing grouping may well have been writing for a long time but simply write for pleasure with no intention of trying to get their work published, while others are either starting out or are honing their writing skills with the intention of finding an agent or publisher, entering or winning competitions or aiming at publication in journals or magazines.
Our view of Emerging writers are those who have a limited number of publication credits and are aiming to further their career in their chosen field or genre.
Our final category is Established writers. These are generally published authors, playwrights, essayists or journalists with an established track record. Some may have a full-time career as a writer while others write part-time.
